In 2012 my twin enthusiasms for design and baking got the better of me, when I was invited to design and run a competition for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Fair in Battersea Park. I invented a competition between engineers applying their knowledge to the materials of baking. Four of Britain’s top engineering firms took up the challenge, and I was left to supervise their efforts, source the ingredients at no cost, and MC the event on the day along with the irrepressible Andrew Martin – inevitably the rain came down just before they finished, the Queen had to judge in haste under umbrellas, but the crowds stayed to watch and were rewarded with giant lumps of chocolate crispy cake to consume, when the wrecking crews moved in at the end of a long day.
